Scripture: Clement 1, Chapters 2 and 7
Chapter 2
All honor and enlargement was given unto you
...
From hence came emulation and envy, and strife, and sedition,
persecution and disorder, war and captivity.
...
Therefore righteousness and peace are departed from you.
Chapter 7
Let us, therefore, humble ourselfs, brethren,
laying aside all pride, and boasting, and foolishness and anger:
And let us do as it is written.
For thus saith the Holy Spirit; Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
nor the strong man in his strength, nor the rich man in his riches;
but let him that glorieth, glory in the Lord.
Clement is chastising the Corinthians. They were righteous people,
but become proud and boastful. Full of ego. So now they are plagued with
jealousy, wars, crime and disorder.
He advises them to stop being proud of their accomplishments in the material
world. To stop giving glory to themselves and to men and give glory only to God.
Then they will get back their peace, love, and social harmony.
