Atheists and the Golden Compass

Atheists are up in arms over some church groups banning the new movie "The Golden Compass" because Phillip Pullman, the author of the book the movie is based on, is an atheist.  If that were true, they would have every reason to complain and I would agree with them, but is isn't.  Many books, movie scripts, and TV shows have been written by atheists and are not banned by churches or religious groups.  So what's the difference this time?

Pullman isn't just an atheist, he's a militant atheist, or, as some put it, an anti-theist.  This is something different.  Pullman doesn't just deny the existence of God, he considers religion, particularly the Christian religion evil and wants to destroy it.   In his words, he wants to "kill God".  No, he's not planning acts of terrorism (as far as we know), just brainwashing children.  So how can anyone object to churches banning his books and movies based on them?

And while I'm on the subject of atheists, I see atheists on TV saying that they are "Good, moral, ethical people who just don't believe in God".  I'm not saying that isn't true, but I have difficulty understanding that statement.  How can an atheist be "good, moral and ethical" without a Supreme Being to provide a guideline of morals and ethics to follow?  Perhaps some atheist could explain that to me.
