Gems and Crystals: Ammolite

Ammolite was only recently recognized (1981) as an organic gemstone.  Individual stones have a mix of several iridescent colors. Reds and greens as the primary color are the most common due to the blue and purple being more fragile.  It is the fossilized remains of an Ammonite, a prehistoric creature similar to the nautilus.  They are found all over the world, but in color and quality usable for gems, only in southern Alberta, Canada.  It is fragile so is usually sold as a triplet for protection with a layer of shale on one side,  clear quartz, spinel or glass on top, and the ammolite in the middle.

The Blackfoot believed ammolite warded off evil spirits, improved health, and aided buffalo hunters by bringing buffalo closer to the hunter.  Some Feng Shui masters believe it improves heath and brings vitality and harmony to the home.

Since most ammolite gems are a mix of several colors, it doesn't aid any particular energy center although one that is mostly blues and purple may help balance a person who's stronger at the red end of the spectrum and the red, yellow and green mixes may aid those who are strong in the blue/violet centers (Indigo and Rainbow Children) to get balance by channeling energy to the red, orange and yellow centers.
