Boka Tree Island
Centuries ago a small group of people lived on the tropical island they called Boka Tree Island. The name came from the single Boka tree that grew on the island.
The tree was believed to be magical due to it's ability to feed the islanders. No matter how many people lived on the island, the tree produced just enough fruit to feed them all. The most fantastic thing about the tree was that a single boka fruit could feed a person for a full month! And the fruit stayed fresh for a year or more. So one a year, all of the people went to the tree when the fruit was ready, took their twelve fruit and went home.
One year, one of the twenty residents of the island went insane. He didn't know it of course.
When the twenty residents went to the Boka tree on the appointed day to get their fruit, the man who had become insane, who's name was Fonzo, took 16 fruit instead of 12. He had no idea why he did that, but he did. When the last person in line got to the tree only eight fruit were left. He took the eight fruit and left, but he knew something was wrong. He wasn't sure what because this had never happened before.
After six months had gone by, Henry, the young man who only got eight fruit, realized he didn't have enough to live for the rest of the year. He didn't know what to do about it. He mentioned his dilemma to some of his friends. They didn't know what to do, so they took the problem to other friends. Eventually word got to Fonzo about Henry's problem. At this point, Fonzo realized that, for some reason, he had more fruit than he needed.
Fonzo went to Henry and talked to him. He told Henry that he had extra fruit and he would give them to Henry if he would help him with some gardening, painting and other work. Henry agreed. He had little choice and, like the others, never suspected that Fonzo had taken extra fruit. That was unthinkable. Theft was unheard of on Boka Tree Island.
So Henry worked for Fonzo for several hours a week over the next four months. At the end of each month, he got a fruit in payment. And Henry survived the year. As did all the other residents.
A year had gone by and the day had come to collect the fruit again. The residents spoke to each other and agreed that Henry should go first this time to be sure that he got twelve fruit. Fonzo, unfortunately, was once again near the middle of the line. Once again Fonzo took more than the expected 12 fruit. This time, he took a total of twenty fruit. This time the last person in line was a young woman named Sarah. She found only four fruit on the tree. She didn't understand - no one did. She took the four remaining fruit and went home.
Sarah quickly realized she would soon starve if she didn't get more fruit and began talking to her friends about it. Once again, when word got to Fonzo about Sarah, he noticed that he had more than enough fruit. He didn't know how that happened. He offered the extra fruit to Sarah if she would do some work for him. Laundry, sewing, things like that. She agreed. What choice did she have?
Before the end of the year, the people began to talk to each other. They were getting suspicious that Fonzo always had too much fruit while someone else didn't get enough. So a number of them decided before the big day that Fonzo would have go last this time. Unfortunately, Fonzo got wind of the plan.
Consciously, he still wasn't fully aware of what he was doing, but he certainly was aware in his subconscious. Very early on the day of gathering, while everyone else still slept, Fonzo went to the tree and took a total of thirty fruit. A few hour later, everyone got to the clearing where the Boka tree grew and got in line with Fonzo at the end. When the eighteenth person got to the tree, he found only six fruit left. Fonzo, and the person in line before him didn't get any.
This was getting to be a very serious problem now. How could there not be enough fruit? There was always just enough for everyone to get twelve. Fonzo couldn't be to blame. He was one who didn't get any fruit. What could they do? Nobody had the answer. This was all so new to them.
Several days later Fonzo approached Zimka, the other person who didn't get any fruit, and told him that he had mysteriously found some fruit and would share them. In exchange for some work, of course. Zimka accepted gratefully. A month later Fonzo talked to Josef, the man who only got six fruit, and told him the same thing. Josef also accepted the deal. In the later part of the year, Fonzo had them doing some strange work that they didn't understand, but they did it because they needed to eat.
Another year has gone by and the people are now coming to the clearing again to get fruit, but something strange awaits them. The Boka tree has been completely surrounded by a high fence. They cannot get near it.
Fonzo tell the others he has discover that the tree is growing on his family property so he is claiming ownership of it and anyone who wants fruit must work for him to get it.
They did not know what to make of this. The concept of owning property was completely foreign to them. So was lying. So they accepted what Fonzo told them and all agreed to work for him.
Several years later, the small island was discovered by a European ship. The captain found himself being welcomed by a wealthy man named Fonzo. He had by far the largest house on the island. By now the people of Boka island had discovered they could catch fish not far from the island, but Fonzo also owned the only fishing boat which they had build for him. The people of the island told the captain how Fonzo had established a fund to care for the elderly who could no longer work for their food.
The European captain was very impressed. He took Fonzo on a trip to Europe where he was given an award for being a great philanthropist. The Europeans were very impressed with how much Fonzo had done for his people.
They didn't know the whole story.
