The Serpent Continued

The serpent doesn't always symbolize materialism, ego, or Satan.
The Caduceus, symbol of the medical profession in the United States is a Hermetic symbol.  The rod of Asclepius is another variation.  Both consist of a staff with snakes or serpents.  The significance of the serpent in this case is probably based on the serpent being a symbol of rebirth in some ancient civilizations. Snakes shed their skin which looked to some as if a new snake was being born from the old.

Snake venom is used to make a variety of medicines and used for various ailments. Could that be part of it or would that have come about later?

That could be part of it as well.  Also Shamans and Witch Doctors often used snakes in healing rituals.
