The Serpent
Some Native American Medicine Men and Women say there are four levels of awareness or perception. The lowest level is called "serpent". This level of awareness is oriented to the physical, material world and everything in it. Serpent awareness deals with everyday survival but with little regard for long term consequences.
The Serpent level is not wrong. We all need to work at this level sometimes. It's only when we get stuck at this level that we have problems.
In Christianity, the Serpent represent the devil. This makes sense since the devil wants us to believe the physical world is all there is. That is his realm.
Christ, Buddha, Moses, Zoroaster and other Prophets tell us there is more. There is something beyond the physical. And we need to strive for it. Now! We can't wait until after we're dead.

I think thatbeing in the serpent stage is not bad.It's not where anyone wants to be but it's often the stage where people achieve growth from much needed to be learned lessons. As you said it's not good to get stuck there.

Exactly. It's not bad and we all need to be in that stage sometimes. It's only when your always at serpent level that it's a problem because many problems, phisical and spiritual, can't be solved at that level.
