On Gluttony and Obesity
Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins.
Obesity has become an epidemic in this country.
So why does the media continue to treat the winners of eating contests like national heroes?
Even though the winners may not be obese, treating them like heroes sends a bad message to people, especially kids, struggling with weight problems.

I wonder why cigarette ads have been banned but you can't go more than a few minutes without seeing or hearing ads for fast food joints. I'm not advocating cigarettes at all, I don't smoke. What I mean is that we are all extremely exposed to the happy/fun ads from birth on that tells us eating the junk is normal, fun, family bonding and sometimes even healthy. In reality the stuff kills us slowly not unlike smoking cigarettes. You can't drive by a fast food place without children throwing a tantrum because they're shown it's such a good thing. What a terrible diet to bring children up on. Children grow up but our habits remain and we grow into obese adults. It is a serious problem in our country. Just something to think about...

I agree. Just yesterday someone was on CNN saying how in poor inner-city neighborhoods, if you wan't to eat out the only choices are fat food restaurants. She is trying to pass a law to limit the number of such places and get some healthier choices. Of course, it is true that healthier food does cost more - initially. But when you factor in the doctor's bills because the cheap stuff ruins your health, it's not so inexpensive then!
