The Squirreliness of Squirrels

The time of year has come when the squirrels are picking up the acorns and burying them for next spring.  So how does the squirrel remember where he buried them?

He doesn’t.  He doesn’t have to.  All of the squirrels bury nuts and all of the squirrels dig them up when they need them.  It doesn’t matter to them which squirrel buried which nut.

A few years ago, I saw two squirrels playing with my dog!  You may think that’s impossible but I don’t know what else you would call it.  The two squirrels climb down a tree to the ground and start chattering until Sheena noticed and ran after them.  Then they would run up the tree and across a branch that almost touched a branch of another tree.  They would then jump to the other tree and climb down from that tree and start chattering again.  They went back and forth between the two trees four or five times before they tired of the game and quit.

Here’s another funny squirrel story from many years ago.  When I was in high school the owners of a supermarket a few blocks from my house were getting angry about “kids stealing donuts”.  The bakery would drop off bread and donuts in front of the store very early every morning and when the owner’s would get there to open the store they would find a box of donut donuts opened and some donuts missing.  They were determined to catch the kids doing it (no surveillance cameras back then).  Shortly after this started, I graduated and stated at my first full time job in a shoe factory.  I started work at 7:00 in the morning so I would leave my house around 6:30 to walk the half-mile or so to the factory.  A few days after I started, I saw the donut crooks in action.  Two squirrels ran up to the front of the store and climbed onto the pile of baked goods. One opened a box of donuts and took one out.  He handed it to his mate.  He then took another one for himself and they both headed up a nearby tree to enjoy their breakfast.
